  • Silently they follow us, mirroring our every move. They form their own community, yet blend effortlessly with ours. While we live our lives, they live those same lives in one dimension. Their world begins and ends with the sun, killed and resurrected with the light each day. They are The Shadow People. We are surrounded by a parallel world of shadows who laugh and cry with us, who move and sleep with us, who never leave our side. They are our silent companions. Although we may not always see them, they are always there, ready to appear in an instant. What a comforting thought: we are never alone.

The sun is their life force, but also shapes their appearance. They stretch and bend, they grow and shrink, they appear and disappear with just a simple movement or a passing cloud. Never do they look the same twice, and never do two look the same. They are like people in that way; always changing and never identical to another. Uniqueness is their way of life. They reflect our outer selves, but they are distorted in such a way that allows them to become their own entity, separate from us. Still, our bond can never fully be broken.

Just as they rely on the sun, The Shadow People rely on us for life. Without us, they cease to exist. Poof. They turn into nothing without our form to mimic, and without our lives to impersonate. We are their true source of life; our form shapes them entirely. What else’s existence depends so completely on ours? Nothing. There is nothing else that we control so completely, so absolutely.

In the blink of an eye, our shadows come and go. The darkness their enemy, but even when we cannot see them, they are there to go to class, cook, walk, flirt, trip, dance, eat, read, drive, study, sleep, and live with us. They are forever by our side. All it takes is some light, and our companions will live once again.
