  • I wrote a poem a year ago
    to soothe my conscience
    a sense of being cheated
of his taking leave of us
and in the past year I grieved
holding his life up to the light
    to understand what is given
and taken by life and death
    Eric lived that simple belief
    take only what is given
    and in that profundity
    he took from nature
    the bountifulness of farming
    he took from Buddha
    the re-incarnated journey
    minus mindless suffering
    so today we feel compassion
    for the gifts Eric bestowed
    and we lovingly partook
  • Eric's bodily remains poured from a bag
    by afternoon light shimmering incandescence
light grey dust and ash mixing with earth
by the shadow of old oak standing defiantly
declaring by trunk and limbs its life force
    and Fran circling kneeling crouching
dust to dust, ashes to ashes, grief to grief
Eric's bodily remains poured from a bag
