  • And what about the dropping of children at American university dormitories for summer activities—this one particularly for precocious children, to throw down a label—and a thing/place where my son has declared his lost tribe found. The hauling in of suitcases, the same going on in adjacent parking lots designated for children who like marching band and children whose team job it is to kick footballs. Adults do this, they drop their children’s allergy medications with the campus nurse and initial the box. It’s normalized experience, most especially normal the blips in comprehension, the participation in clichéd existence that can at once be satisfying. We stopped for lunch on the way. Which is to say quite plainly my heart folds in on itself when I go. The boys, during their stay, will be joyful, tearful, their intelligent, and emotional selves stretched through the universe, which I learned from the radio, driving alone on the way home is expanding more rapidly than once was thought, so fast that one day we won’t see beyond our own galaxy because even moving at the speed of light, the space between us will be too far. It makes me remember the oldest boy, young, his questions from three feet tall. How much does the pond weigh? There’s not really zero of anything, right? What's the biggest thing that isn't real?
