  • We were a motley crew but hitching in Hawaii, big Is., is cake. Seems like half of drivers pick up just to have somewhere special to go. We got a scenic side trip to South Point and then put in request for a locals' beach to the east. Got there just as a very 'local' family cleared off and it was ours. Shaka.

Three days of trail along the shore in Volcanoes park had wiped out camp food, but a mini-mart in Pahala and some winter mangoes from the tree in Naalehu gave us faith enough. There were cocos in the palms, which was great 'cause we didn't have much to drink, either.

Maybe we swam, I know there was a nice lagoon just off to the right. I should have written a note from then. I would like to remember some jokes, some hopes. We were three sojourners with little in common but bags and compass.

Actually, they let me keep the compass and from here we had a long dry day with lost trail to night walking A'a lava where I crumpled my ankle bad and barely hit highway again although right away there was a van with two sweet young gals with water and medicine and they were going right where we wanted, of course.
