  • I decided against wearing the chicken suit to prom. No sure whether or not it's a choice I'm proud of. I vaguely remember jumping up and down on the steamy, too-small dance floor of the historic riverboat that our class president had worked so hard to make the prom venue. I must have spent a lot of the night outside on the deck with my friends, looking at the moon and the muddy river. What I remember most about the night is driving around downtown Sacramento afterward with one of those friends, lost on our way to the post-prom sleepover. We had no plans to get drunk or lose our virginities that night--those were still very fearful and mysterious prospects for me, at least. My friend composed little rhymes for the street names we were looking for. The windows were down to let in the cool delta breeze and I remember laughing until it hurt.
