  • We arrive in the middle of the night. Catemaco's streets desolated and transformed into rivers by the ceaseless rain.

Bundled in plastic and gore-tex, we hesitantly left the bus station ... but it didn't matter. Cold and completely soaked through we settled for the first hotel on our way. We already regretted making the detour to visit the promised paradise of Catemaco...

The sun did decide to break through the next morning but the streets were as deserted as the night before.

As two dutiful tourists, the only ones in the town, we took a small boat to explore the famous 'Lago de Catemaco'.

In the seventies, a similar float brought a group of test monkeys to a lone island in the middle of the lake. Written off by the University of Vera Cruz, they now form the saddest attraction in the world for thousands of tourists ... including us.
