I was visiting a little mountain in South India. As mountains go, it was quite little, about 6000 ft. But that's quite a climb for me. It was the Velliangiri Mountain or ‘Mountain With A Silver Line’, and the delicate curtain of mist which veiled the mountain top gave it an out-of-this-world quality. It was beautiful nature-wise but I was here for another reason.
Legend had it that Shiva retreated to these mountains once upon a time a long time ago, and left his energies here for his devotees to imbibe. And many yogis have come fater him for thousands of years.
On February 27th, 2014, Mahashivarathri or the Night of Shiva, I made a pilgrimage to the mountain-top. 6000 feet I climbed, to the peak. It was truly a remarkable experience. The trek takes about three hours if you are fit and healthy. Mind you, fit and healthy in the trekking sense not in the city-dweller sense! :)
I made it to the top and spent about two hours meditating there, and then came down. It was such a powerful experience. The wind, the mist, the physical effort, the mental calm, everything came together to give a sense of what Shiva truly is.
