  • 001 | I’ve traversed this river countless times. My childhood was spent in the Midwestern town that rests on its banks, just on the other side. I left some years ago, seven by my count. Most years I come back for the big holidays. Today is not a holiday. I got a call from my sister yesterday, a cool Spring afternoon. Dad is dying. Heart attack. Doctors are giving him 24 hours. That was 20 hours ago. I’ve come to say goodbye.
