  • The woman who smiles
    Back at you,
    She knew
    Before you did
What your life would be about.

    That hour when talking
    With your young friend
About the journey a woman makes…
You show her your memories of the road.

In this one, nine months old,
    Sunlight sitting in her hair,
    Arm around her
    Delighted Mother,
    The presence of a Buddha,
    She knew.

The girl at three on the lawn
    Examining intently that daisy,
    Oblivious to her father’s lesson,
    Letting the flower speak petal,
    She knew.

The girl at her first Communion
So proud in white velvet gown
    To have wed
    Her beloved Friend.
The man with the Infinite Eyes
Who came to walk with her
    In dreams,
    She knew.

And in that moment before the camera
    Flashed orange against a
    Pearl threaded life
    Strung round your wrist,
That Mona Lisa smile spoke the
    Adamantine language of your Soul,
    You felt that wordless joy.
    And knew.

    That the woman sleeping,
    Underground
    Leaf littered sitting
    Weeping working
    Mending caring
    Doing dressing prayparing
    Chanting haunting hurting
    Yearning holding loving
Is also in this moment dancing
    Looking laughing
    Lit somewhere,
    Here…
    Seeing nodding

    Loving you
    Look twice
    Across forever
    And see
    And say, ‘it’s you!’
