  • I grew up in New York City and one thing that has always surprised non-New Yorkers is how industrial/urban sounds help(ed) me fall asleep because they are associated with home. For me the sounds that I associate with home are the hiss of the steam radiator, the white noise of traffic and the sounds of a radio.

I became interested in finding out what sounds or “noise” people associated with home. I really enjoyed Gregory Whitehead’s piece on screaming and wanted to do something similar in that I would simply record peoples responses to one topic/question: “What sounds do you associate with home?” I also asked people to illustrate these sounds and specified that the images didn’t need to be representational.

I chose Cowbird because it’s an easy and beautiful platform that gives equal fanfare to sounds and images. I think that the web is the best place for a project like this because it creates a democratic space for an artsy project.
