  • Herr Dr. Specht, none of us liked him. He was skinny and rigid and old and the school principle. We were starting to like THE BEATLES and getting ready to be first marxists and then hippies. He was conservative and right - wing and that was enough for us to throw him into the huge pot of uninteresting and maybe even unworthy human - beings.

But one day our philosophy teacher was sick and he came to teach us a class and there and then he said something that has kept moving my mind to wonder about it all once and again. He gave me the greatest gift that whatever morning of the week it was, about 50 years ago in a girls high school in a´suburb of Hamburg.

He said - and it still seems to me that I was the only girl that listened to him - " What is most surprising and actually mind - blowing is that there are all these atoms and molecules and planets and moons and stars and they behave certain ways, but the outrageous thing, I think, is: that with all these tiny particles chasing here and there: THINGS HAPPEN, ocurrences occur, and they occur ALL THE TIME! Can you perceive that this is absolutely incredible?"

I could. I still can. It truly seems incredible.....
