  • in 2008 i went to prizren in kosovo to screen a documentary at a festival there. i loved the town and the landscape, and i took a lot of pictures. many of the places i photographed felt a little forgotten, but in an enchanted way.

i flew in and out of macedonia, with a connection in slovenia. already on the flight , i remember looking down at the seemingly endless forests, the soft hills underneath. it reminded me of an old audio cassette with eastern european fairy tales i used to have as a child. there was something weirdly familiar about this landscape i had definitely never seen before, and the image stuck with me.

on the flight back, the sky was overcast and i didn't get to see those hills a second time. the clouds only opened up a short while before we were going to land in munich, where i lived then. i got a glimpse of the alps and then, as they petered out, a lake appeared. it seemed fairly big and a little eerie, with its silvery surface under the low-hanging clouds.

it took me a few seconds to realize that i was looking at the chiemsee. i was born here, spent the first two years of my life close to it and came back for vacations with my family for years. from up in the clouds, it looked so different, i almost hadn't recognized it. but it also had never looked as magical as it did at that moment, from a distance.
