  • I'm sitting in a minivan in a traffic jam on a causeway in the sunshine state. The van is piloted by my best friend, captained by his wife, and crewed by their two boys. They are the best people I know.

More than a decade before this moment, I helped my friends load their things into a rented truck and watched them disappear from Brooklyn, on their way to months of road trip adventure and years of building a life together in the south.

When we first met I'd been jealous of the captain, jealous of the way my friend reoriented towards her, jealous of their new secrets and jokes, until she gave me so much love of my own that I melted, signed papers, and became a lifelong member of her crew.

And now we're crawling across this causeway, and she's telling her older boy about the trip. She tells him how they camped in wild places and how they liked to follow their noses. She tells him how they made a promise, even as their stops began to last for months and years, that they would never finish the trip. She tells the boy and his brother that they were both born on the trip, and that we're all on the trip right now.

Then she turns around and showers us with that smile that shines straight from her heart through her thousand watt eyes. "We're always on the trip," she says. "Always."
