  • Canto 1

The mystery of Shadowwing is introduced to the story.

The lake, a pool of darkness
    Lay hidden in the fog
And so it came to be called Fog Lake.
And Fog Lake was in the wood
    Where Shadowwing resided.
The wood was full of shadows
And so it came to be called Shadowwood.
    And Shadowwing watched and waited.
    Little was known of Shadowwing
And he liked that. For he was
Mysterious and dark as the night.
The woods added to the mystery.
His wings were covered with beautiful
    Feathers, and sometimes
They were the last beautiful things people saw.
    They glinted, their blackness
    Resembled the night and universe
    Filled with many stars.
    The lake, forest and Shadowwing
    Were stunningly beautiful.
Usually Shadowwing spread out his wings
As if spreading out the night
    And people were no more.

    Accounts of seeing Shadowwing

    Account #1

The forest opened up its arms
Like night, so I walked into it
    With eyes fit to see
    The stunning sights.
The wind whispered and the sky turned dark.
Shadows arose, even with no light
    Shining through the clouds.
And across the sky there was a streak of black.
Shadowwing smiled, flying in the air.
He smiled at me before he took off.

    Canto 2

More accounts are given and the mystery continues.

    Account #2

Before my eyes the very morning dew
Resembled night, black as the universe
As shadows swept over my eyes.
    Then Shadowwing landed before me.
His eyes were black and beautiful.
    He smiled at me
    And he took off.

    Account #3

    I saw him one time.
It was night instead of day.
I went out to the woods with a flashlight
    To see Shadowwing for myself.
The woods were dark, even with my flashlight.
    My eyes soon adjusted
    Then I screamed in horror,
    For Shadowwing swooped down
And landed right next to me.
“Hello,” he whispered, then flew away.

    Account #4

One day I was walking along a path
    Near the edge of Shadowwood
    When Shadowwing flew above me.
He noticed me and wrote something in
A notebook. I know not what.

    Witness death #1

    Soon there was a death
Of the man who gave the first account
    Of seeing Shadowwing.
His body was found near Shadowwood.
He lay across the sidewalk quiet and still.
His pulse was checked and there was none.
A stretcher was he carried on.
    And more deaths did follow
    Which you will read about
If you stick to the story
    of Shadowwing.
