  • One awful week in October 2012, my mother-in-law lost her daughter (my beloved wife of 27 years), and, seven days later, her sister. This was only three years after losing her husband of 50 years.

My mother-in-law was the youngest of six siblings, and her sister was the oldest. They grew up in a small Bronx apartment, raised families two blocks from one another in a suburban neighborhood on Long Island, and later retired to gated communities only a few miles apart from one another in South Florida. They were an almost daily part of one another's lives for 75 years.

Three years before she passed away, my mother-in-law's sister sat on a couch in my living room, and told this story about her late husband.
