  • Be My Valentine

You know, Valentine's Day is so very important to all those people in love. All the fellas try to find the perfect gifts: jewelry, flowers, chocolates, lingerie, cards....all those things to tell the person you're sweet on how much they mean to you.

All those things are nice, mind you. Cap it off with a dinner for two, either in an upscale restaurant or with candlelight at home, a little dancing, maybe a nice romantic tub with candles and bubble bath and flowery scents all around, and you've probably described the ideal Valentine's night for most women out there.

But you know, next February 14th you could add one more thing to the mix: A well toned, in shape body, one that is going to be around for a while. Not only is it a gift that says “I love you”, but “I love you so much I want to be around to celebrate every possible day I can with you.”.

I remember back when I was a kid, it was not unusual to hear about people celebrating their 50th, 60th, or even their 70th wedding anniversary. And when you saw their photo in the paper, they were usually in pretty good shape for their age.

Back then, they had to be. We didn't have the appliances and the “time saving” devises we have now, we didn't have computers to take the place of mail or the newspaper, and games were something you played with other people. We were more physically active in the 50's and 60's, so we had to be in shape in order to survive.

These days, we sit around on our butts staring at computer screens, or playing interactive games with friends on line. Machines do our dishes, wash our clothes, and in some homes even sweep and dust for us. We have more time on our hands, and we don't always use it wisely.

So make a commitment this year to give your special someone something special next Valentine's day. A Valentine's Day resolution, if you will, to get back into shape so you can spend the next 20 or 30 years with the one you love.

Today was Leg day, and in keeping with the theme this week, I increased my Squats to 110 pounds and my Lunges, Extensions, Calf Raises, and Curls to 70 pounds. Deadlifts were already at 110 pounds and I kept them there. Believe me, I felt them just fine.

Three sets of 10 reps, then the polish off Leg Presses on the Total Gym at Level 6 was enough to have me wobbling up the stairs, heading for the blender where my smoothie was already set up in the blender. Along with the two cups of 2% milk, a scoop of chocolate whey powder, a banana and a raw egg, I added a couple of nice strawberries to celebrate Valentine's day.

Afterward, I felt it, and am feeling it now. I'll wake up tomorrow a little sore. But physically, I am in better shape than I was in my 50's. I intend to see many more Valentine's days with the one I love. How about you?

I hope you are having a blessed and glorious Valentine's Day.

PS: This special musical dedication is for L, always in my heart, always my Valentine.Ti Amo, Amore mio.
