  • Benjamin was surrounded by birds feeding them when i walked up. His radio was blasting so he didn't look up and say hi until the birds stirred and flew off. We had biscuits for lunch and talked about this and that. Mostly the idea of God and the ideas of this world. He wouldn't let me call him a veteran because he is still a soldier, fighting a fight for good, he says. He wouldn't let me give him a few dollars because a little blue car brings him food and that's all he needs. Says he can't wait to leave this place and go home and be with the Lord. He said he hadn't had a drink or drug in 54 months and hadn't engaged in sexual acts in 13 months, including masturbation. He was pretty proud about both of those efforts. Here's the best thing he said though, verbatim...
"There is good in this world but it is still hell. Men are misled. They climb up higher on the backs of others and push em down. I can't wait to die and be free of it. I know one day i will be free. I know one day i will not be apart from. And that day can be tomorrow. But still today, i am at peace."
