  • There is something so beautiful about a bond between a father and a daughter.

Maybe its something you're born with, maybe you develop it through shared experiences. Maybe it's about finding things together. I'm not sure--all that I know is that my bond with my dad is one of the strongest. There's simply nothing like it.

My dad is a craftsman, a designer, an artist, an engineer. It's magical the way he can transform objects, ingredients, and ideas into anything.

Most recently, my dad taught me "sewing machine". I say it that way because it's so much more than sewing; it's the mechanics, the theory, the history, and the value of making something yourself (or even moreso, making something with someone you love). Now, this may sound like elementary stuff; but that's just the thing-- he transforms "something" into something larger.

Recently we've been using a Singer table machine from the early 1900's (pictured above). Occasionally in the middle of a project it breaks. Which is actually the amazing part. Together we take it apart, and he tells me how it works, how it changed history, he says a lot of, "be careful you don't"s. Then the next time the same thing happens he tests me on what I've learned, sometimes I act annoyed.

But really, I think it's the best thing ever.
