  • They all begin to feel the same, the hotels, but you can pick out the
    variations if you really look. Coconut-lime-verbana-scented shampoo instead
    of cucumber melon. Five pillows instead of four. Fluorescent lightbulbs
    instead of incandescent. All variations on a theme. But the routine is
    always the same: find the light switch, turn it on, jump on the bed to test
    its softness, open the suitcase, put the toiletries to the left of the
    sink, unpack the electric water kettle and tea paraphernalia, and plug in
    the cell phone near the bed.
    You've got to have a routine; it reminds you of home when you're sleeping
    in a different bed in a different city every night, in a hotel you could've
    sworn you stayed in last night.
