  • It's all about Persistence!

Went by the dealership where I used to work this morning to drop off a couple of favorite snacks (healthy snacks, by the way, almonds with a little heat) to a friend who's turning 50 today. Lots of new faces, which doesn't surprise me in this economy, but a few older ones as well. Tena, a black woman who is an exceptional salesperson, saw me coming toward her office and had to look twice. As I was going past she popped her head out and said, “Is that you?”

Okay, yeah, I was flattered by the remark and pleased the change was noticed. Since John, the friend I came to visit, was in a manager's meeting, I sat down with Tena, who asked about weight loss and how she could drop a few pounds, and told her the same thing I've been telling you in these journals. You can do it, anyone can do it, you just have to WANT to do it.

It's all about persistence, folks. Schwarzenegger, Edison, Einstein, even (ugh) Obama will tell you it's all about pursuing a goal relentlessly and never taking NO for an answer. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, you have to keep your eye on the prize.

In spite of a few chores I have around the house today and the work I have yet to finish on the two books I am working on, I'll get my workout, I'll watch my calories, and I'll end the day knowing I've accomplished a few things. And I have to tell you, that is a mighty good feeling.

You see, it's not just the endorphins. It's also the attitude. You can't believe how good it feels to look in the mirror and not see a gut hanging out, especially when you've had one for several years. And the changes I have made in my lifestyle to accommodate this are very positive.

Take today's menu. I started off my day with Andouie and Egg Beaters with a little onion and cheese. Andouie (var.) is a southern spicy sausage, about the size of a hot dog. One of them is like having two slices of bacon, but tastier (in my opinion).

For lunch, I'm going to have a can of tuna with spices, a cheese snack, and a couple of tangerines. For dinner, some of our leftover Chicken and Noodles (I still haven't figured out how to make that with less than 8 servings, but I love leftovers) with some mashed potatoes. I didn't have an evening snack last night, but if I want one, it will be popcorn or a container of yogurt.

Now if you look at that menu, you'll notice one thing glaringly absent: BREAD! I've got nothing against bread, mind you, but we Americans are much too used to a Fast Food mentality, and almost every kind of fast food out there includes bread. Bread means Carbs, and Carbs are the problem for most of us.

You see, carbs get broken down by the body to be stored as FAT. You need some fat in your body to make it run right, but no where near the amount most people carry around with them.

If you've already taken the steps to trim out the carbs in your diet, good for you. If you haven't, you might want to consider it. If you want to lose weight, it's a must.

About ready to get into my sweats for today's ab and aerobic routine. For new readers, I do several stretches and then do 250 repetitions total of the following exercises.
Oblique Twists – 30 per side
    Floor Crunches – 40 each
    V-Ups – 30 each
Exercise ball Situps – 150 each.

Yes, that's a lot, and I didn't start out doing that many. As a matter of fact, I started doing 50 situps on my exercise ball, which is used to cushion and relieve stress on my back. After I was comfortable doing 50, I moved up to 75, then 100, then started adding additional exercises to develop and tone the other muscles.

These days, I do my oblique twists on my Total Gym because you have to hold your core tight throughout the entire exercise and I can feel the workout more intensely. Usually I do these last, just before I jump on my Gazelle for a 20 minute session to get my heart rate up.

Tomorrow is a weight day, Arms and Shoulders, and I will use the Total Gym for my fourth set after using my weights to “pump” my arms.

Now, this routine I do might sound too intimidating for you, but I am here to tell you, there are others that will work just as well. No matter what you choose to do, remember, if you want to lose weight and get in shape, Persistence is the key!

I hope you are all having a blessed and glorious day.
