  • Sitting in a Lakota language class on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation near Sharps Corner, South Dakota:

The first 5 students at the table were asked to give a sentence to translate into Lakota.

I was first and mine was “Please forgive me, I am a journalist.”

I then found out there is no word for “please” or “forgive.”

The closest word for “forgive” that they could come up with was something like "forget."
