  • Considering sleep:
    To take a pill
    And let the dreams
    Fall in suits
    With the hearts
    Left beside the bed
    And the jack of clubs
    Always there
    Beside the joker
    With his pointed hat
    And bell

    Or refuse just one
    And watch the myriad shapes
    On the wall
    Coalesce in patches
    Blurring reality
    Until I find myself
    Knitted into some storyline
    Where the queen of hearts
    Lets me keep my head
    But I lose the rest
    Of me

    With bleary eyes
    And black circles underneath
It’s a question with no answer
As I flip back and forth
    From aware to unaware
    Where I dream
    And never dream
As the patches on the wall
    Grow larger
Or the image of just one
    Who sees me falls instep
    Beside me
    And I find relief
    If only for a moment

And the bottle on the table
    Whispers what it wants
    While I rebuff it
    Because you’re there
    Just out of reach
    Then gone
    Beneath a jungle of images
    Painted by your hand

    I sit up and smoke
    Inhaling
    Exhaling
    Inhaling
    Exhaling
    Until I hear you
    Until I hear the word
    Rest
    And I do
    For just awhile
