  • People say to appreciate every day because you just never know when something unexpected is going to happen. But usually it is not until the unexpected happens that the truth of that statement hits the core of your being.

    Twelve years ago I fell asleep on the living room sofa waiting for my husband to get home. The next thing I knew I was standing barefoot in my nightgown knees feeling like the proverbial wet noodles as two tall, young State police officers were telling me that my husband and his younger brother had been killed in an automobile accident three hours earlier.

    The door to my life as I knew it closed with a heart-wrenching bang. I was forty-eight years old.
