  • A student told her teacher, "I'm stuck, just like the guy in the Koan you told who bumbles (is foolish, then arrogant) and maybe that is ok. I felt affection for the guy, and therefore more affection for my own bumbling. The path is crooked."

    "Yes!" the teacher replied.

    The interview turned to meditation. The student wanted some guidance.

    The teacher said, "Think of being at a party and there is someone you really, really want to talk to. But there is so much noise at this party. You focus intently on this person while you talk, even amidst all the conversations at the party around you. That's meditation. Only the person you are talking to is your breath."

    The student's meditation practice benefited from this instruction. Her breath was like this long lost friend she wanted to connect with. Paying attention to the breath felt like love.
