  • Thoughts flicker in the darkness
like lightning in a gathering storm.
    Nerves stretched, tuned
like the strings of a fine instrument,
    vibrate at the slightest touch.
    Body waits
    still, taut, coiled,
    ready, quivering in anticipation
    of release.

Gulf air hangs heavy in the night,
    hot, still, moist,
    oppressive.
Sweat oozes, beads on naked skin,
    trickles, tickles,
    as it drips, drips, drips.
    Sweet ligustrum perfumes air laden
with the scent of mold, decay, and distant skunk,
    sweet, heavy air sucked greedily
    through nose and gaping mouth,
    swelling lungs, charging surging blood.

    Choreography,
    notations in four dimensions,
    flashes from mind to limb,
    arabesque, pirouette, a grand jete,
    muscles explode, limbs stretch,
    sweep, reach, leap,
    flying, flying, flying
    out of the darkness.
