  • Driving up a wooded road near my home, I am lost in thought. Squirrel bolts across the road. Swerve. Hopeful for a moment. But, no. I see Squirrel in the rear view mirror. Hit in the middle of the road. Big tail -can't get myself to go back and make sure it is not suffering. Oh. I'm so sorry, Squirrel. If I had not been lost in thought.

Was Squirrel going to visit someone? Surely another will miss this one, notice it is gone. Surely this is felt by other Squirrels.

Just then, the sky turns flame, brightening with the most unusual light. First, the tree tips are lit, then the light rolls closer and lower and everything is glowing. Sun, trees, and sky greet Squirrel.

The next day, going back down the hill, I see no sign of Squirrel's body. Hawk, owl, snake or strange light took it.
