  • I rush home from work (well, as fast as you can rush when you're walking), and feed the hungry cats. Then I get down to business. I'm going to A-----'s for dinner, and I'm bringing the food (or at least part of it), and I don't have a lot of time.

I run a bath and chop vegetables. Half a red onion goes into its own little baggie. Oh wait, I need spices, too. A spoonful of curry, plus freshly roasted cardamom, coriander, cumin, fennel and fenugreek seeds. They go in another little baggie. The cast iron skillet that I leave on the cooling burner smells too hot, and I double check it twice and then three times to make sure I've actually turned the heat off.

A slice of squash, two parsnips, one zucchini, one yellow pepper, two plum tomatoes, all chopped into pieces. They go in a big baggie. I put the vegetable peeler on top, and draw the slider closed. A----- has a sweet potato at his place, but he doesn't have a good peeler.
