  • As he stepped through the glare of the spotlights he was surprised to see humans staring at him. They asked him who he was and he explained about the trip through the wormhole and landing on this planet. He told the entire story of the war and escaping only to be the only one rescued after being attacked by wild beasts. He paused in his tale for breath and one of the men said “you are the Great Transmitter!” They all looked at each other and as one said “we thought you dead years ago.”

They shut off the flood lights and asked the others to join us. No one moved until they began holstering their weapons and offering food and drink to all. Angel was astonished to see men who looked a lot like him. She realized there were no hostile thoughts and after sheathing her sword moved to his side. The other two warriors followed suit and relaxed a little, although they still stood with their backs to a wall.

The leader of the men began his explanation “I don’t know where to begin, so I will start at the beginning as I know it. Forty years ago a space craft was launched into a wormhole that appeared in the Earth’s atmosphere. The Great Transmitter sent a running account back to Earth so others could know what to expect when they followed. The transmissions stopped suddenly when they landed on a planet in another galaxy. Our fathers were on the next ship launched a month later.”

He couldn’t help it, he had to interrupt “Forty years ago? It was this year. And your fathers? I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

The man continued, “You went through both space and time when you made the trip here. To you it seems like less than a year. To anyone on the outside of the wormhole, it was much more. Leaving a month later made our fathers forty years earlier on this end. Who knows how much time passed back on Earth?”

“And it didn’t help that they landed on one of the sister planets. The planet was going through the transition from one star’s influence to the other and, as is the custom, they were being attacked unmercifully by her sister planets. Their ship was much bigger than the one you came in. It contained a crew of people ready to colonize the planet. They also had weapons capable of defending themselves against any attackers. After a brief battle with the attackers, they were able to beat them back.”

“The natives of the planet were gentle people who welcomed them with open arms. The colonists first few years were easy ones as they spread across the fertile valleys with their homesteads. They welcomed the natives into their villages as friends and neighbors. Then the fourth year brought a bad case of flu to the colonists and proved fatal to any native who came in contact with it. All the natives and a good many of the colonists died that year.”

“Our fathers and mothers were part of the colonists. They were young and adventurous and gladly signed aboard the experimental ship “Discovery”, named after one of the space shuttles used in Earth’s early space ventures. They were all single when they left Earth and didn’t begin to pair off until they started the colonies. My dad says he fell in love with her before they left, but didn’t ask her until almost too late. When he saw another man eyeing her, he walked right up and proposed marriage. Mom said she often wondered what took him so long. Each of us,” he pointed to his six companions “has similar stories. We grew up in the same colony and played together as children.”

Angel interrupted the tale with the thought “Are your parents still alive?” You could have heard a pin drop. All seven sets of eyes were wide and staring at her. He said “The women of this planet communicate by thought. Don’t be alarmed. It takes some getting used to, but you can think your answer back at her if you want. The only problem with that is humans have trouble sending and receiving to each other. None of your comrades will hear your response.” He was getting better at it, but, after all he had been dealing only with Falian women for four months. Communicating with humans was still difficult.

He was surprised when he heard the man’s thought “Yes, they are all still alive. Excuse me, but has anyone ever told you how beautiful you are?” Angel looked at the man laughing and thought “I have now met two earthlings from different generations and they both speak the same way. Yes thank you, but I am spoken for. Your Great Transmitter is the father of my unborn child.” She stared at him with her eyes aglow and batted those long lashes. His knees felt weak. “Angel.” He took her hand and put his other on her barely noticeable belly. “You never told me. Is it ok? I mean will our child be ok?”

“Quiet my love. Only time will tell the answer to that. I don’t know if he will look like you, or she will look like me. We are making the first of a new species. Perhaps our new friends will join us.” To the men “We women of Faldo have a colony of our own. There are many women who would be interested in men like you. I have watched them eyeing my man. If you are interested, I suggest you come with us. We could use new bloodlines.”

“Wait” he thought to everyone. “We still don’t know what your intensions are. Why have you invaded this planet?” It got quiet as everyone waited the man’s answer. “For forty years we have had to beat back the attacks from our two sister planets. This year we decided to end it once and for all. If the beings of your planet will agree to a permanent peace, we will relinquish our hold on your world. We did the same to the other sister planet during their last transition and we are at peace with them. We are waiting for word from the larger city states before proceeding with a war they cannot win.”

Angel thought, “You can do all this with only seven men?” The man laughed, “No, we are just a patrol sweeping a settlement. There are over one hundred in our exploratory mission. With the superior weapons at our disposal it rarely takes more than a demonstration of firepower to convince anyone that peace is the way.”

He nodded to Angel and she extended her invitation again “Well gentlemen. It seems you have time on your hands and little to do. Would you like to be introduced to some more beautiful women?”…
