  • Galileo once said, "The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do."

    Of course, Galileo didn't live in England, where the weather keeps mine green and purely ornamental.

    But not this year. This year my bunches of grapes finally ripened last week, to warm plummy colours hanging gloriously on the vine. Edible? Probably not, only the best of growers manage proper grapes in our climate, but nevertheless, glorious.

    And I awoke to how amazing a summer, our summer this year has been.
