  • I am from the Shevaroy hills in South India, a tiny place called Yercaud, where I spent 7 years in a boarding school being brought up by strict old-fashioned nuns. And yet a place i want to go back go for its serenity, cool fresh air, and the nuns.
I am from Goa, my native place, a place that is famous for its beaches, churches, temples, hospitality and warm people who love music, theatre, sports and their afternoon siestas. I am from the Portuguese rulers who ruled us for over 400 years; who forced Christianity down the throats of my ancestors, sometimes by flinging beef into the wells. They influenced our culture, food amd music too.
I am from a land of mysticism and spirituality but where godmen are as corrupt as the politicians and corporate bigwigs. The land that gave the world KamaSutra, the Konark Temples with erotic sculptures, now also notorious for raping women physically and mentally. Where there are countless women goddesses worshipped, yet where the girl child is not welcomed or killed at birth.
I am from a nation that is supposedly secular, where someone like Sanjay Dutt is thrown into prison for possessing an illegal firearm, (which he didn't actually use) and where political leaders not just get away with murder ( the Godhra riots where thousands of people belonging to a minority community were killed) they also aspire to be the next Prime Minister of India, ie. by 2014.
And if that person comes to power I'll have to say that I'm from a nation of bigoted senseless idiots who voted for someone like this.
    Cry, cry my beloved country.
