  • My youngest, J, was sitting on the stairs, trying to pet the more tolerant of our two cats. Who was, uncharacteristically to J's experience, having none of it. J was rubbing the closest part - in this case, the belly. Ray dislikes that intensely. "J," I said, "try petting Ray-Ray on the dark fur. He likes that better."

    Ray, it should be noted, is a black/brown tabby with a paler stomach and black fur along his spine (where he loves attention). Unless J targeted the tail, I thought smugly, that would steer him right.

    Ah, but my youngest is more creative than I am....

    He stood up, turned off the light, and resumed attempting to pet Ray's belly.

    Ray left. I'm not sure what chased him away - the belly petting, or the sound of my giggling.
