  • My grandparents said that, especially as they got older and more reliant on others. They were never comfortable asking other people for help or admitting they needed it, but I suspect they asked God, a lot.

As I grow in years and in my faith and spiritual understanding, I find myself hearing this differently. I find myself believing God will provide. And I feel bad that we laughed at one particular instance. I suppose we have been forgiven, and humor is a good thing. And maybe Grandma and Grandpa Rhoades can have a chuckle with us, from where they are now, on the other side of the pearly gates.

It was summer. My parents still lived on Grandpa’s farm. By this time Grandpa couldn’t see to drive and Grandma was too weak with arthritis to drive. But they still liked to go places, and it was 4-H fair week. They couldn’t miss the fair. My mom and aunt took them when they could, but one night, all possibilities exhausted my mom said, “Mother, I can take you, but there is no one to bring you back home.” Grandma is reported to have said, calmly, “the Lord will provide,” to which my Mom added, in telling the story at least, “oh, so now the Lord provides taxi service?!”

Well, maybe he does. My memory ends with the punch line. But they must have got a ride back home that night. I’m sure they didn’t miss the fair.
