  • Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

-- Walt Whitman, Song of the Open Road

PERHAPS not afoot, and perhaps not on a long brown path, but with light hearts, healthy and free, we're hitting the road tomorrow. Bound from Reading, Pennsylvania to Searsmont, Maine.

Family reunion at my brother Steve's delightful hillside farmstead.

Our niece Nina is coming from Friday Harbor, Washington; our nephew Jed is dropping in from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Brother Steve will be home from his never-ending international business trips. We're going to circle the wagons, gather the clan, light some bonfires (well, maybe barbecue grill fires), and swap stories late into the starlit nights under the glorious Milky Way.

But first there's that Open Road -- which sometimes isn't all that open.
