  • When it's time for a new commander, they hold a Change of Command Ceremony. First Sergeant hands the flag to the current commander. He relinquishes his command by handing the flag to his own commander who then hands the flag over to the new guy. There are speeches and flowers and the playing of the National Anthem. Somewhere in the midst of the short post-ceremony reception, the old guy slips out. He says:

"There's nothing worse than an old commander hanging around."
