  • I'm shopping at my favorite health food store. Depending on how I've traveled to work, this store is often on my way back to my car at night. Today I've walked, so I came here during my lunch break.

I like coming here, because the woman who works here most of the time is nice. I mean, she's always nice. She just works here most of the time.

I can't find one of the things I'm looking for - vitamin D. I keep walking back and forth in front of the same eight feet of shelves, but can't find the D anywhere. There's A, B, C... and then E.

She's busy with customers, or I'd ask for help. Instead, I just keep walking back and forth, not seeing what I want. (A, B, C... E.)

Finally she calls over, Can I help you find something?

I explain my problem. She points up to a top shelf, nowhere near where I've been looking. She says they also have some softgels that she hasn't put on the shelves yet. She gets me a bottle when I go through the cash.

There's a long lineup at the cash register. She's all alone in the store. When it's finally my turn, I ask if it's always this busy at noon hour.

Yes, she says, but that's why I'm here. Meaning, she wouldn't have a job if it wasn't busy at noon hour.

I smile, because I like it when people realize the implications of their jobs being "easier."
