  • THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND, irreplaceable photograph of my grandfather in his First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry uniform (circa 1910 but reflecting a much earlier era) was almost lost in an unfortunate episode last summer. I'm grateful the operative word in that last statement is 'almost.'

    The Philadelphia Troop traces its lineage to 1775, which makes it perhaps the oldest military unit in the United States. My grandpappy? Not quite that old. But rather dashing in his day, eh? No wonder my Grandma couldn't resist.

    And the rest, for better or worse, is history...
