  • The single life. Day after day, week after week, alone. I look through the profiles on okcupid and plenty of fish... and the few women from around here are... well, they are not my type. I keep looking because I have to believe that there are compatible people for me. There are but they're all at least 1000 miles away. Usually from the Pacific Northwest. Where else would I find a woman who could understand me?

I went to the Rainbow Gathering this summer. There were 10,000 hippies in the woods and while getting some chai tea at the Krishna kitchen I heard a sister singing as she walked along the trail. When she approached, I joined in. We made fast friends and spent the afternoon touring all the kitchens, holding hands, and singing together. The next day we met by chance and joined the prayer for world peace. I saw her again later that day. She said that our meeting would be a nice memory of a beautiful day spent with a kind Rainbow brother.

This memory of two days friendship is bittersweet. She's from the Pacific Northwest of course and I'm back in Iowa. I don't think I'll tell her what an impression she made on me. From the songs she sang to the stories she told to her crossed eyes. I feel like I'll remember her forever and that it would be easy to see her every day. Back to Iowa... there's little profit in thinking about this.
