  • Work goes well and a raise in pay is possible. Financial security, healthy family, major life transitions.

There is a rumor that we might get a raise as high as 3% next month as the new fiscal year begins. All I got was a general email saying 'merit raises have been approved'. 3%! I've never known better and frequently worse. The high life awaits!

Of course the raise has been eaten up by the rise in health insurance premiums and the reestablishment of last year's 2% reduction in Social Security tax. While those of us languishing around the U.S, national median wage see the average wage climb largely because the highest and few are earning 200+ times this median wage.

I wonder sometimes where the outrage at this increasing inequity is to be found. Are we all sufficiently cowed because we have our cell phones and TV and maybe a car? Not starving. Hunger is powerful force, the most powerful. The fuse behind the French and Russian revolutions. Yet there is hunger here too, judging by the lines at food pantries and the huge number of people on food stamps. Many of us are close to the edge, some have fallen over.

But not me. Somehow, through luck and an almost pathological prudence, that phrase 'financial security' applies.

Believe me, I am thankful for it too. Coming ever closer to retirement and secure in that retirement. Ironically, my retirement income will most likely outpace my working income by a considerable amount (not least because I will not be devoting a large chunk of it to savings). I'm going to have to learn how to spend.

I think I might enjoy that.
