  • At the risk of defining it too broadly, it begins and ends with food. "Glorious food." First memories, worst and best memories, amniotic echoes, precognitive desires, simple cravings in the day, other cravings later. All food.

See for yourself: [pause ironic audio for a one-minute introspection into all your relationships ever and the role of food in them.] See?

And there, I have defined it too broadly. This was to be a very particular story about a woman who used to cook for my family and feed me rice pudding while I sat on a rocking horse on a balcony with a view of where my dad was working in Upper Egypt. I was going to recall the light, heat, and dust in the kitchen. The sand, the sounds of heavy construction. I was going to remember my nanny's hard bargaining with fruit and flour sellers. I would eventually have related my earliest lascivious memories of calves and clavicles and everything in-between to her time standing on a bucket, kneading dough. But it's gone this way, today, because I'm hungry.
