  • So here we all are. I realize I'm reflecting on this months after it happened, but the whole evening was almost too magical (yes, that old cliche is rearing its ugly, beautiful head) to touch until now.
We all looked our best then. Spent a lot of time on ourselves; skipped school to primp. Hair, dress, shoes, all of it seemed insurmountably important in our eyes. Now that I look back at it, individually they didn't mean much but the whole was really more than a sum of its parts.
We danced. We sang. We snuck out of our ballroom to the one next door where they had a live jazz band instead of a crappy DJ. We danced some more. We rested our aching feet up on a couch and gave each other back massages. After the party was over we ate chips and hummus and laughed over Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Perhaps it's not your typical "prom" experience. None of us were dashing off to have illicit meetings and raunchy outings or drink beer and wake up the next morning not knowing what happened. (Maybe that's not typical either but I know it happened.) But it was a beautiful night. These are the people I will remember for the rest of my life. The night might fade away, the makeup will be washed off, in five years the dress won't fit, but the people will last forever.
