  • Meet Mr Mighty Nandi, very dryly and popularly referred to as Monolithic Bull by visitors to his hometown. His other beautiful name is Yeduru Basavanna, a name that conjures the personality of a warm, big, gentleman that sweet Nandi is. My dear Nandi is the vehicle and gatekeeper of Lord Siva, the one I am fond of for his gentle persona. It's very easy to spot my friend Nandi when you enter Hampi. He's on the far right of the entrance to the town and has spent close to 1500 years sitting and admiring the beauty of the grand Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to his master Siva that is at the other end of the street.

It was friendship at first sight. My friend Nandi is a giant, very much like me. He likes peace and calm, very much as I do and is happy to spend hours, days, years and centuries watching the world, observing life and taking pleasure in it. I don't need a reason to love him, Nandi my friend. One big Nandi hug was enough to tell him that I love him and the warmth of his body told me the same back. And like that, we are friends for life.
