  • The blood pressure spikes
the mind runs riot all over the temples
    pulsing panicking
    Is it mine?
    This inchoate fear?
    After a day of worrying
about food - what to cook for the kids?
and displaced cars in a wobbly house
and money's absence even when present
    I am wracked
    and raw
and the yell at the end of the day is a plea
and my body hurts in the liver
    and the abdomen
Please listen to me, whispers the heart...
    the beating pulse
    the drumming fright to flight
    from what?
Here, in this moment between my
    heaving mindfed beats
    you are
    and always have been
    safe.
    What is behind this fear?
    Will Mama come home?
    Will I be left behind?
    How will we find food?
From where will the money come?
    The cries of generations have
the mind scanning the distant horizon
for any spike of threat, helplessness or fear.
Late at night, in the soothe of my quieting heart
    freed from mind's seize
I feel the comfort of body and sway of receding tide of blood
and the warmth of my lover's hand, steady there.
Rest in this moment and the next and the next
Remember what power of love -
brimming fulness and riches and goodness
    - dwells beating
    (softly now, slowly)
    inside you...
