  • 'I' is the ninth letter and a vowel in the ISO basic Latin alphabet. The letter 'I' is the fifth most common letter in the English language. The dot above the lower case i is sometimes called a tittle. I find that rather titillating.

The phrase "to dot one's is and cross one's ts" is used literally and also to mean "to put the finishing touches to" or "to be thorough".

I am, is a state of being.

In the marriage ceremony, many young couples answer the questions posed to them while taking their marriage vows: "I do". It’s simple, succinct and to the point.

After seven years, the couple may feel the seven year itch. They may forget their marriage vows and the ‘I love you’ of their relationship. The 'I love you' becomes more me oriented as in 'Do you still love me?' Those simple words, 'I do', are very powerful.

“What I do”, has many meanings. Do I walk the walk and talk the talk? Am I a hypocrite, an idealist, an active participant or simply an invisible entity? I can be working or inactive.

How I see things are from my limited viewpoint at any given time. There may be a million different vantage points to illustrate the same thing I see, based on all kinds of different criteria, audiences and perceptions.

'I' can be full of imagination, intrigue, insipid or uninspired. 'I' means me. What I want, think, feel, wish or aspire to. 'I' is also a part of a community, a public awareness, an internet that shares information and links us all together. Diverse in scope and an integral part of societies ‘isms’.

'I' is seldom idle. 'I’s' character is shaped by those who love 'I'. I love you, is a very important phrase in human relationships. In fact, there are different kinds of love. Platonic love, romantic love, unconditional love all supporting that simple phrase, 'I love you'. 'I' often hopes that whatever love is found will be a lasting one. The power of those three words captures the minds imagination to dream beyond the simple 'I' to become a part of something much bigger, a family, a generation, a shared history.

Thinking about 'I' makes me dizzy. There are so many possibilities and implications inherent to the letter I. I invite you to illustrate your own ingenuity in the deciphering of this incredible letter.
