  • Roused from sleep by rude alarm
    the darkened room aglow
    with sunlight filtering
between the edges of the window
and the shade. Made my way
into the hall, Olivia behind me
    tail wagging as passes me
    en route to kitchen door
    the morning constitutional
    her goal. And mine. Soon,
    her majesty is scratching
    the aluminum a washboard
    for her steady rhythm
signaling her desire to come in.
Once again we begin our day
    amid inopportune precipitation
    and darkened, looming skies
    the grass and vegetation
pay it no mind, they bask
    in liquid nourishment
    contentedly receiving
    what is needed to sustain
    and grow. Bright flowers
    sharing colors against
    the gentle green, awaiting
    sunlight. The morning cool,
    serene, and holy,
    blessed by nature and revival.
    Even now, as sunlight is
    emerging, I realize my prayers
    began in praise, natural
    as rain emerging
    from the skies in celebration
    of the day.
