  • we come to this place of peace
    each breath is deeper here
    and colour truer
    the hills densely green
    the trees flame
    with sunlit autumn
    so warm
    we sit on the deck
    and listen
    so carefully
    to the silence that
    the wind, when it rises,
    surprises us
    a roar along the river
    as ducks lift wing tips
    dipped in water
    splash into flight
    together
    and a fantail
    spreads the arc of wings
    against the light
    deftly
    as a Spanish dancer
our eyes widen to catch each flourish
    or it's missed
and now I watch the flax
    clatter
    in the wind
    easing the manuka
    into lean
    and turn
    and the hush is
    now shushing with air
    and we breathe it
    even deeper
    still
