  • Gathered around the 21st Century big screen TV campfire, TOPICS heard what this strange new thing called TED was all about. Paradigm shift, or just more new fangled tech they did not want to bother to adopt?

They came. They saw. They listened. They asked questions. They remain curious.

For 20 years this small, tight group of thinkers and doers in Vail discussed wars foreshadowed, multinational influence, economic decay and opportunity from within, cultural fractures, and global connections. Their thinking was guided from their own experience, reading, and world leaders they knew well. Combined, they influenced daily hundreds of grandchildren. But rarely were they moved to changing anything in their personal lives from this 11,000 foot view.

From the base of the mountain, TEDxWomen talk by Jennifer Siebol Newsom, filmaker of Miss Representation, they asked what they could do about the way media misrepresents women and promised to attend the showing of the film in Vail.

For the past 20 years these conversations were held and concluded on a theoretical level. Never do I recall being moved to action. Was it the subject matter and its real impact on our granddaughters? Was it the more compelling nature of Jennifer delivering a powerful message with photos and video clips highly produced to deliver a potent message?

From books to TEDx Talks storytelling is taking a radical turn for an interactive, furtive future wired-with-sound, sweet treats for the eye, and evocative messages for the heart. Will it equate to the shift from oral traditions to the printing press? Will song lines of the 21st Century be laid down in the cloud? Spending my 54th birthday with thinkers and doers discovering a refresh on ways to share ideas worth spreading makes me happy, happy that Cowbird exists to recall this disrupting birthday tale.
