The car was driving on the opposite side of the road. Our side of the road. It was windy, the snow blurred the view and the mountain road was covered in ice. I had just finished the last drop of coffee when the car lights were suddenly in front of us, lit up our faces and our lives depended on how you would react in a matter of seconds.
After the heavy bump our jeep flew off the road into the steep snow and ended beside the river. Fortunately it didn't roll over. What was perhaps three seconds felt like for ever. The sounds of breaking glass, the deep breath I took, the sounds of smashing car bodies and the crying of our daughters is what I remember first. All in all, nine people were in the crash. It was that last second's turn off the mountain road you took, that probably saved our lives and prevented everyone from getting hurt. And the angels grandma sent of course.
As I am sitting in the couch in our home, sending these lines out into the universe I am having this moment of clarity where I feel I must be the most fortunate woman alive to be able to just put my computer aside, stand up from where I sit, walk up to you and just look you in the eyes. If you smile I will smile back. If you don't, I will love you just the same.
