  • some dreams are set aside

some we walk away from leaving
    just a fogged nose-print,
    a set of smudged fingerprints
    on the window
never even dared to cross the threshold

    other are reached for
    price tags fingered
    flipped to see,
    sheee-it
    lips pursed
    silent whistle
they never make it off the rack

some few we take into the changing rooms
    try them on for size
wonder if and if and if
    look over shoulder wistfully
    daring our reflection
    to make the first move

    some are purchased hastily
    out pacing common sense
seeking to get ahead of the inner censor
Ag, they sit forlorn and crisply creased
    unworn splendour
    flashy reminders in
    fluorescent green
    over styled
    under thought
    all the hues of the
    what-were-you-thinking spectrum

As i slipped out of bed so early in the dark
    as i whispered
i love you to the sleeping house and you inside
    I thought,
    to awake
    and dream anew?
    What price?
    What risk?
    What chance?
Can i afford not to take?
