  • Dogs yawn as a way of neutralizing a stressful situation. For example if they meet another dog that seems tense or aggressive, they might yawn, as a way of calming the situation down, to show that they are not threatening anyone.

    Or as in this scenario: She has been staring at the food on the table for so long, that the situation has become tense. Too stressful. Something needs to be done. She can't stand it anymore. She yawns, then try the staring thing for a while more. When this doesn't generate a snack, she moves on to plan B: lying very still in a slighty uncomfortable manner.
