  • "Hey! Who turned out the lights?"

    "Dark in there, is it?"

My son has a bucket on his head again. I watch him in disbelief. He staggers in circles.

"Who turned out the lights?!" He is tickled by his own joke, laughing.

"Ummmm, you put the bucket on your head, so ..."

He peeks out from under the bucket and grins. Then puts the bucket back on. Now he's trying to walk backward. I shake my head.

He is a metaphor for modernity, the ongoing human condition. Eyes downcast at smart phones, checking email, facebook, texts. The wide world ignored. Unlike my son, we don't even see the joke. We don't even notice or bother to laugh and say, "Hey, who turned out the lights?"
